Top 10: Austin

Austin’s Top 10 Rollercoasters!

Hello everyone and welcome to the first of a 2 part series where both me (Austin) and Tom will be counting down our top 10 Rollercoasters of all time!

10. The Big one

Starting off at my home park of Blackpool Pleasure Beach, we have the U.K’s tallest roller coaster (for the time being anyways). The feeling that you get going down that first drop is comparable to nothing else in the U.K, the views you get of the area are spectacular and can get fairly intense at some points. Only if I had the money to buy a whole piece of its track to put in my garden.

9. Revolution

Staying at Blackpool, there’s not much to say about this Arrow Dynamics shuttle coaster. This little guy packs such a massive punch that each time I come off it I’m stunned over and over again. But please Blackpool, add a lift, my knees can’t deal with those stairs anymore, especially in the rain.

8. Wild Maus XXL

Our first of two travelling coasters on my list, we have the Mack wild mouse which is found each year at Hyde park Winter Wonderland. The pops of airtime what this ride provides alongside the sharp turns and relatively good drops thrown in had me and Tom in absolute stitches going around. Having the added bonus of having such a unique queue line with it being a fun house gets it a deserved place on the list.

7. Stealth

Stealth go fast, stealth go high. Rita not go so fast, Rita no go high. Stealth good, Rita bad.

6. The Smiler

Going off to Alton Towers now and to the coaster with the worlds most inversions and one of the darkest theme in the world, The Smiler. This coaster never stops for a single second, turning you upside down like it’s life depends on it. Whenever you get a duelling ride it is absolutely magical. The sinister theme is one of the best in the world and that soundtrack will always be ingrained in my mind forever. Also that airtime hill is just, *chefs kiss*.

5. The Swarm

Going back to the Island like no other, the U.K’s only wing coaster. What a stunner this coaster is with the post-apocalyptic alien theming around the area. That first drop being amazing and each element just slotting together extremely well. Please Thorpe, bring back backwards Swarm for its 10 years anniversary, I beg.

4. Saw: The Ride

Look guys I know it’s not that good in retrospect but Gestlaur Euro- Fighters are my favourite coaster models and I have a massive love for the Saw film series. Put these things together and of course I’m going to love it. That stuff aside, the theming of the station is top notch and littered with great Easter eggs from the series and the indoor section is done perfectly with that drop coming from nowhere. Also unlike Tom, I do appreciate being sprayed with fake blood from a body.

3. Munich Looping/ Olympia Looping.

Return to Hyde Park Winter Wonderland, we have the worlds largest and arguably best travelling ride in the world, Munich Looping (or so it’s called in England at least). This coaster while growing up was the one that got me into rollercoasters and watching P.O.V’s and the fact I got to ride it this year was special and I was not disappointed. This thing is incredible and intense all the way through. I just wish my shoulders just weren’t crushed by the restraints so much.

2. Icon

I know I’ll get it in the neck here from Tom for putting this coaster here but #1 just about beats it for me. This was the first coaster me and Tom rode together, it’s our #1 at our home park and my most ridden coaster in the world with my record being 18 in one day. This airtime machine never fails to amaze me and that double down into the second launch is probably my favourite element on a ride ever and I’m excited to see if Enso improves this ride further. But please Blackpool, keep the mist on and never ever turn it off again.

1. Nemesis

I don’t think I can truly put my love for this coaster into words which can do it justice but I’m gonna god damn try. This this is an actual beast (pun intended) and I don’t think I’ll find a coaster more intense anytime soon (it is the most intense ride in the world after all). Just the way this thing rips through the tracks makes you stick into your seat is mental. The ride goes so hard and just doesn’t stop for a moment. Couple this with the theming with that brilliant Nemesis monster centrepiece, the iconic soundtrack, backed up by that roar heard from the entirety of Forbidden Vally and all those near misses while all being low to the ground, it all comes together to make a flawless coaster. I now sit in fear that the re-track will dull it down a little and I will cry/ turn into the fat kid from the start of Shrek Forever After if the roar does indeed fade away.

With this now being the end of the off- season with opening day being not even two weeks away, this is likely my last appearance in a blog until then and I can’t wait to see what the future holds! Part of that future is that as of today we are launching or YouTube channel with videos hopefully coming very very soon! Very exciting times coming soon for us all at YMCA Coasters!

The Cedar Point Dream

Everyone knows this place, home to some extreme coasters, insane rides and one huge reputation. The coasters alone boast such a reputation with the first hyper (Magnum XL 200), the first giga (Millennium Force) and the first strata (Top Thrill Dragster) as well as rides such as Gatekeeper and Rougarou along with what is considered the best coaster in the world- Steel Vengeance. This park is the holy grail for many enthusiasts and I am one of those people so I thought I'd break it down and look at why I am so desperate to get to Sandusky, Ohio. History Of course the history undergraduate had to go straight to this but this park seems to have its history brushed to one side as its a park that constantly adapts, yet it is older then our old friend Pleasure Beach by 26 years and of their 16 operating coasters, only 6 opened this century. It's a park that keeps moving forward, always at the forefront of the amusement industry and breaking records. This is evident by the closure of

Trip Plans For The Coming Years

If there is one thing I love to do as an enthusiast when I can't go to parks, its plan what parks I would like to do and when. This started during the lockdown in October 2020 and I keep refining and updating the plan to keep it as accurate as possible. Firstly there's a list of park in the UK to expand my cred list beyond 100 that are aimed to be done in 2022.  UK Credit Plans Starting with a few places large and small, near and far with a total of 23 credits to gain in the next 12 months. Chessington is high on the priority list after not being able to fit in last year along with Southport Pleasureland. Then with the aim of mopping up the credits not too far away before I finish uni, I will hunt down West Midland Safari Park, Cannon Hill park, St Nicholas Park as well as Buffalo coaster at Drayton Manor. Then up near Manchester there are 2 coasters at New Brighton to tick off the list. Finally with the major trip of the year for this country in terms of new parks- Adventure

My Ideal Park: Part 2

Welcome back to this series, going through my ideal park that I am pretending to create. The main aim is to make an immersive, well themed, fun and exciting park and ultimately tailored to what I like to see in theme parks across the globe and drawing plenty of inspiration from these places. In this second part, we will be looking at the first 2 of 5 large themed area- these will be a Space and Jungle theme, situated on the immediate left of the entrance via a path through some trees will be the Space themed area and then travelling through a path to past the Space theme to the Jungle themed land.  Space Land To cover this, as I appreciate this s a relatively vague theme. This is set in 50 years time where society has set up a city on the moon. I know it's not too original but it seems pretty neat to me and think done right, will be the signature area of the park, aiming to be Phantasialand level theming across the park but this one just being pushed that bit further to stun guest
